This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention is less visible throughout the area’s long history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 3, Intermediate (more precisely, level 3.1 between 1~5). It is recommended for “bikers” and “cyclists”. It is supposed that you are in good shape.

Starting south of Lisbon, this bicycle tour in Portugal guides you to a winery where you will learn about the famous Moscatel wine and also taste it.
Then you will enter one of the lushest areas south of Lisbon – the Natural Park of Arrabida. On one side of the park, you’ll admire beautiful Mediterranean landscapes and at the other side, the gorgeous coast with accessible beaches where the fine sand and clear sea waters provide a strong contrast of unusual colors. You will cycle along the coast and after crossing the Sado river you’ll reach Troia, and then the place where the Natural Park of SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast begins. It extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

Daily tours include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park and taking a swim in the limpid and clear sea. Numerous cliffs and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. Cape S. Vicente is a passing area for thousands of birds of prey.

This bicycle tour in Portugal also goes to the south-westernmost point in continental Europe, the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Finally, you have the opportunity to visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve and the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve. You can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection.

TESTIMONIALS

“Just finished a bike tour with Jose, Christina and Ricardo and loved every minute of it!
This was our second bike vacation (the first one in Ireland with a different company) but this one was far superior. Everything was so well organized we did not have to worry about a thing. During the bike ride, we had two guides, one at the front and one at the back with Christina in the support van coordinating everything behind the scenes. The food and accommodations were great and the routes were well planned out with interesting stops along the way and amazing scenery. The equipment was first rate and while the route itself was challenging, there were frequent breaks and times to catch your breath – I never felt rushed or pressured to keep up and was glad to have Ricardo at the back cheering me on.
Definitely a memorable trip! Would highly recommend.”

Kevin and Diane Bateman, 52 and 54 – Canada

“Its hard to describe in words how wonderful Jose and Christina are! It was like being with long time friends.
This was a awesome trip, very well planned, We felt spoiled! We cycled Toward the Algarve, and loved every minute of it. The bicycles are top notch. We were so excited to get a bike shirt! Hotels were beautiful and the staff very nice and accommodating. We liked the fact that we never felt rushed. We had time for leisurely breakfasts.
Great job and wishing continued success to Portugal Bike!”

Sylvie Russo, 57 – Philadelphia, United States

“My husband and I recently biked Towards the Algarve (guided) as part of our honeymoon in Portugal. We had an amazing time and can’t say enough good things about José, Cristina, Ricardo and Portugal Bike. From the moment we were picked up in Lisbon to the last day when we were dropped off at the airport, we literally did not have to think about a single detail. José and Cristina’s meticulous attention to detail and their focus on the needs and enjoyment of each cyclist was always apparent.
Each day’s ride consisted of beautiful scenery, both coastal and inland, as well as Jose’s fun and interesting “lesson” stops covering a myriad of topics such as the history of a small village, insights into cork tree farms and harvest, or the source of the amazing scents that filled the air (like Cistus ladanifer and eucalyptus). We all loved the picnic snack and lunch stops “catered” by Cristina which always included delicious local, fresh fruits, veggies, baked breads and sweet treats as well as Portuguese olive oil and incredible cheeses. After arriving at a small town or village each afternoon, we had time to explore the area and/or relax by the pool before heading out for a dinner of authentic Portuguese food at a lively, local restaurant. The accommodations were all great, our favorite being the B&B Monte Joao Roupeiro in Aljezur. Magical!
If you are onsidering experiencingc Portugal by bike, I highly recommend doing it with Portugal Bike – Everything we dreamed of and more!”

Cynthia Bensley, 53 – Natick, MA, United States

“Just finished our bike trip to the Algarve from Lisbon. What an amazing journey: beautiful views, fabulous food and wine and wonderful accommodations. The very best part of the trip were Jose and Christina, our guides. They were phenomenal! They made sure our needs were met and went out of their way to ensure we had a fabulous experience. Portugal is a friendly, beautiful country with excellent fresh seafood. The weather was cooler than we expected which was good for cycling. Bring a good camera as the coastal views are spectacular. Make sure and get the fish cataplana somewhere …excellent. We hated to say good-bye to our new friends, Jose and Cristina. ”

Stephanie Harrison, 55 – Colorado, United States

“I cannot say enough good things about this trip. Everything went perfectly. Jose and Cristina proved to be the perfect hosts. They managed to pull off every part of this trip without a single hitch. Every detail was well thought out. This was my 4th cycling trip in Europe and by far the best. We were furnished with first rate bikes (carbon) with upgraded components. The scenery was breathtaking. I have biked in the Provence region of France and through the countryside in Puglia, Italy, but this area of Portugal is the most beautiful that I have seen. We stayed in beautiful hotels throughout the trip. Jose biked with us everyday and Cristina would meet us for lunch and then at the hotel, where our bags would be waiting in our rooms. They arranged a wonderful meal each night, which always included fantastic wines. The biking turned out to be just the right amount. The shortest day, 25 miles, was challenging due to the climbs, and the longest, 63 miles, was fairly easy since the terrain was mostly flat. Cycling is a great way to see this beautiful country, so I would encourage you to check out Portugal Bike if you have any interest in seeing Portugal.”

Dedrick Burch, 66 – Georgia Atlanta, United States

“We have had a wonderful week with both José and Cristina, cycling “Towards the Algarve”. It is clear that great thought and planning went into all the details of the trip – the routes, the hotels, the picnics, the restaurants – all of which meant we could experience the scenery, the sights, the sounds and the hospitality of Portugal. We are happiest when on our bicycles, and being on bikes in the sun with the ocean beside us is even better. We appreciate that you were willing to do this early-season trip for just the 2 of us. You have a great partnership and your skills complement each other. We’ve enjoyed getting to know you as we chatted at breaks and over dinner. We will certainly tell our cycling friends about Portugal Bike and also send some possible Canadian contacts to you. We wish you a successful summer season. “

Marg and Art Heidebrecht, 57 and 72 – Ontario, Canada

“If you plan to cycle in Portugal you need to choose this operator. The equipment is top notch and the couple who operates is top of class. Very focused on making your trip most memorable with careful attention to detail. They love their country and show it proudly and in style. A very personally focused company with gear that is better than the big operators that we have used on other trips and in other countrys. We would highly endorse Jose and his lovely wife Cristina. They understand the service business and value their customers and show great care. This is our second trip with them and there will very likely be a third.”

Jan and Larry Fichtner, 67 and 66 – Calgary, Canada
